ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR
Monica Negoescu graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) in 1996, specializing in English and German language and literature. She later earned a Master’s degree in American Studies in 2004 from UBB’s Faculty of European Studies, followed by a PhD in Philology in 2016 from the same university. Over the years, she has received several scholarships in Germany and Austria, which allowed her to further specialize in her areas of interest: foreign language teaching methodology, applied linguistics, literature and folklore, translation studies, and professional communication.
Since the 2024-2025 academic year, she has been working as a career counsellor at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Robotics, and Production Management, where she actively contributes to the organization and delivery of events designed to support the professional success of students at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN).
Her wide-ranging interests are reflected in the numerous scientific articles, conference papers, and translations she has authored throughout her career, as well as in two volumes published by Casa Cartii de Stiinta in Cluj-Napoca: Carturari saxo-romani in Transilvania secolului XIX and Preocupari ale intelectualilor germani transilvaneni pentru cultura traditionala romaneasca in secolul XIX. She is also the co-author of a language proficiency test book (Teste de competenta lingvistica. Limbi straine pentru stiinta si tehnica ) and the sole author of the textbook Energy. English for Electrical Students, both published by UTPress.
Her latest textbook, Career Strategies for Tech Professionals, is designed to offer comprehensive training for future graduates preparing to enter the job market. It guides readers through every step of the process, from researching and assembling a strong application to successfully navigating the technical interview, all while focusing on highlighting the candidate’s most relevant skills and qualities. Drawing on her experience as a career counsellor, the author provides practical, effective solutions for each phase of this delicate journey and speaks directly to young graduates in a language that resonates with their emotions, curiosity, uncertainties, and strong desire to succeed.

PREFACE
The current coursebook answers needs related to professional development and explores the tradition of guides dedicated to this topic. It is divided into six interrelated chapters which are meant to raise awareness in terms of the importance of a number of communication-related concepts. The first chapter frames the notion of communication by using the conceptual tools utilized by the linguist Roman Jackobson (1896-1982) and provides background information with regard to the underlying tensions that inform current approaches to communication.
Once the landscape of communication through Structuralist lenses has been sketched, the book opens through the next five chapters a valuable window into the world of professional communication. It is from this perspective that the reader can grasp the importance of job advertisements, cover letters, career goals, soft skills, personal branding, and interviews. Consequently, the current coursebook can be successfully used to sharpen both skills related to writing, as it makes reference to specific types of documents used withing professional settings, and speaking. It considers both conventions imposed by the use of a specific genre and insights into the human interaction, as it shifts from textual to human protagonism.
In addition to this, the coursebook stands out due to the large constellation of professional communication notions that it defines and submits to scrutiny, and the richness of the examples that it uses to endorse its claims. Thus, while it dwells upon the importance of concepts such as “leadership communication”, “team dynamics”, and “job satisfaction”, and describes “SWOT analysis” and “SMART framework”, it also challenges the reader/student to engage with exercises, apply close reading and correct potential mistakes. By doing so, it reveals itself not only as an introduction to professional communication, but also as a tool that cultivates attention to detail and fosters self-awareness.
The author has used her extensive experience in teaching technical English, as well as her familiarity with professional communication which resulted from her activity as a student counselor, to create a coursebook which underlines the multifarious aspects of professional environments nowadays. Given the vast theoretical territories mapped by means of this coursebook and its applicable nature, the exciting journey of engagement with it is to grant both professional and personal growth.
