Petre Grimm (1881-1944)

Istoric literar, traducator, cu specializari in anglistica si germanistica in Marea Britanie, Germania, Austria. Din 1919 profesor, apoi sef al Catedrei de limba engleza a Facultatii de litere si filozofie Cluj, Universitatea Cluj, decan si prodecan al facultatii intre anii 1930-1932. Doctorat in litere in 1925. A organizat predarea la nivel universitar a limbii si literaturii engleze in Transilvania, punand bazele unei adevarate scoli filologice. Prin traduceri, articole, cursuri si conferinte, a popularizat peste hotare valorile culturii romane.

A realizat traduceri din Shakespeare, Tennyson, Byron, Jonathan Swift, Coleridge, Keats, Benjamin Franklin.

Din volumul „Poems”, aparut in 1938, am selectat pentru editia de fata 12 poezii eminesciene talmacite in engleza de Petre Grimm, cu speranta ca prin frumusetea lor unica, irepetabila vor cuceri cititorii de limba engleza.

Petre Grimm (1881-1944)

He was a literary historian, translator, with several fellowships in English and German in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria. Starting with 1919, he was a professor, then Head of English Language Department in the Literature and Philosophy Faculty at Cluj University. He was Dean at the same faculty between 1930 and 1932. He obtained a PhD in literature in 1925. He organized the teaching of English language and literature at university level, laying the foundation of a real philological school in Transilvania.

Through his translations, articles, courses and conferences, he raised awareness upon the values of Romanian culture. He translated works of Shakespeare, Tennyson, Byron, Jonathan Swift, Coleridge, Keats, Benjamin Franklin.

For this edition, I have selected from the volume Poems, published in 1938, a number of 12 poems written by Eminescu and translated by Petre Grimm, hoping they will win the heart and soul of English speaking readers, through their uniqueness and breathtaking beauty.
