The “Petru Ghenghea” Engineers’ Orchestra
Founded in March 1956 at the Railway Institute in Bucharest as a chamber ensemble of university teachers, the orchestra has brought together generations of engineers and amateur musicians for almost seventy years, on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum and across the country.
Its founder and first conductor was Prof. Petru Ghenghea, whose name it has borne since 2006. In 1990 the orchestra came under AGIR’s patronage, which gave it a stable home, a rehearsal and concert hall. Since 1998 its artistic director has been the automation engineer Andrei Iliescu.
