The AGIR Publishing House began its work in 1919, shortly after the General Association of Engineers in Romania was founded.
Its first publications dealt with questions of great interest for the early institutional organisation and the economic and industrial development of Greater Romania, and sought solutions to the problems facing governments and Romanian society. Many were reports submitted to the authorities of the time or public lectures given by leading engineers.
Between 1940 and 1950 it also published major engineering works, among them “Hütte” (translated from the 27th German edition), the “Mechanical Engineer’s Handbook”, the “Civil Engineer’s Handbook” and the “Chemist’s Handbook”.
After 1950 the publishing house was forced to stop its work, and its portfolio, including the “Technical Lexicon”, a fundamental work later published in 19 volumes, was taken over by a state publisher, Editura Tehnică.
The AGIR Publishing House was re-established in 1990, publishing the bimonthly Univers Ingineresc and the quarterly AGIR Bulletin; since 1998 it has also prepared and published books. Its editorial programme is organised in thematic series covering electrical, mechanical, food, civil, electronic and communications engineering, as well as management, technical and scientific terminology and the history of science and technology. Its books carry an ISBN.
